Upon completion of this instruction he studied for one year at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), where a number of his paintings won awards. Upon completion of this instruction he studied for one year at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI), where a number of his paintings won awards. One of those paintings, a landscape, was acquired by the Wichita Art Museum. After study at the KCAI, Summey entered the US army and served in Korea.
