He was born in a Krakow family, but spent his early youth in Zakopane, where the future artist's father ran a well-known health care facility in the villa Gerlach in Krupówki. After studying at the famous Jan III Sobieski gymnasium in Kraków, he studied at the Jagiellonian University, where he obtained his doctorate in philosophy in 1906. Chwistek's scientific interests evolved: after his doctorate, he dealt mainly with experimental psychology, and then with formal logic.
