The Halona Blowhole is one of Hawai‘i’s natural wonders, created thousands of years ago when molten lava tubes were formed from volcanic eruptions. Halona, means “lookout,” in Hawaiian. On clear days, the islands of Moloka‘i and Lana‘i can also be seen in the distance.
This is a depiction of the lava shelf below Koko Head and adjacent to Hanauma Bay on O’ahu Island. The surge from the Molokai Channel pounds the lava rocks and makes this area a favorite for painters
Originally painted for Albert and Gretchen Waterhouse shortly after the artist arrived in Honolulu in 1911. Albert Waterhouse was born in Honolulu in 1879, and in 1903 was a director in Waterhouse Trust Co.
Sold 3/2/2007 for $73,438, setting a world record price for this artist at auction.
