Ritschel’s superb interpretations of the California coast earned him the title of Dean of American Marine Painters. The larger version of this painting can be seen in the Monterey Museum of Art's collection, as well as being illustrated in Plein Air Painters of California/The North.

Ritschel moved to California sometime after 1909. He built a stone studio-home high on a bluff overlooking the ocean in Carmel Highlands. From his “Castel a Mare” Ritschel said that he watched the sea…until ‘he made himself master of a marine color-magic…’
Framed in a very fine period frame that originally surrounded a significant painting by Armin C. Hansen, N.A., who was a close friend of William Ritschel. Ritschel’s superb interpretations of the California coast earned him the title of Dean of American Marine Painters.
