Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann was born in 1883 in Hamburg as son of a merchant family. He received his first artistic training with the Hamburg nature painter Arthur Siebelist. In 1909, he was a student of the Académie Matisse in Paris. There he was also in contact with the German artist circle of the Café du Dôme. He met his future wife, A. In 1909, he was a student of the Académie Matisse in Paris. There he was also in contact with the German artist circle of the Café du Dôme. He met his future wife, A. Povorina, a member of the Hamburgischer Künstlerclub and the Hamburg secession. Since 1928 he was professor at the Cologne Werkkunstschule, dismissed by the Nazis in 1933. After the First World War, he co-founded the Hamburg Secession, and after the Second World War, he was the founding director of the Hamburg State Art School.
