    Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann was born in 1883 in Hamburg as son of a merchant family. He received his first artistic training with the Hamburg nature painter Arthur Siebelist. In 1909, he was a student of the Académie Matisse in Paris. There he was also in contact with the German artist circle of the Café du Dôme.

    He met his future wife, A. Povorina, a member of the Hamburgischer Künstlerclub and the Hamburg secession. Since 1928 he was professor at the Cologne Werkkunstschule, dismissed by the Nazis in 1933.
