In Chicago, he took classes at the Frederic Mizen Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. In Chicago, he took classes at the Frederic Mizen Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent most of World War II as a B-17 pilot in England documenting his experiences with realistic paintings of aircraft in combat. After the War, he worked as a commercial artist and portrait painter; he also became a consultant to the United States Air Force, creating art programs and a USAF museum.
