In Chicago, he took classes at the Frederic Mizen Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. He spent most of World War II as a B-17 pilot in England documenting his experiences with realistic paintings of aircraft in combat. After the War, he worked as a commercial artist and portrait painter; he also became a consultant to the United States Air Force, creating art programs and a USAF museum.
