He made sets for the play Equinox, played in the theater of Dubrovnik. The play did really well, and it attracted public attention to his work. He made sets for the play Equinox, played in the theater of Dubrovnik. The play did really well, and it attracted public attention to his work. He won a grant from the municipality of Dubrovnik for studying in Vienna. In autumn 1903, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied for four years. At this time, he works showed pleinairiste influence, but his works are often inspired by the morphology and secessionist symbolism.
