Sinibaldo Scorza was born into a wealthy aristocratic family from Voltaggio (now part of Piedmont). His father was the Conte Scorza di Voltaggio. He trained in Genoa and in 1619 became the court painter to Duke Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy. When war broke out between Genoa and Savoy in 1625, Scorza returned to Genoa disgraced and was charged with treason.
