Waentig was born in 1881 as the son of an old-fed family of publishing in the Upper Lusatian town of Zittau in Saxony. After completing the Realgymnasium, he came to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts at the age of only 16. In 1907, Waentig moved to Gleimenhain near Alsfeld, where he set up a studio in a barn, went to Munich in 1911 and came to Gaienhofen on the Höri peninsula on Lake Constance after the First World War with his wife Eleonore.
